Painting Beyond Painting is another exhibition in the series of contemporary art exhibitions created by the NCCA North-Western Branch as part of its in-depth study of the newest trends in St. Petersburg art. The exhibition presents works by contemporary Petersburg artists, as well as works made by professors and graduates of the Ilya Repin St. Petersburg State Academic Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (Academy of Fine Arts).

Painting as a visual arts genre again becomes important within contemporary art. New painting exhibitions are gaining critical acclaim all around the world. The project aims to show contemporary Petersburg artists working as easel painters see how a painting becomes part of the contemporary art fabric and explore the way classical visual art becomes a new medium. The exhibition presents over 30 works by 20 Petersburg artists from several generations: Marina Alexeyeva, Anna and Alexey Gan, Ilya Gaponov, Ivan Govorkov, Valery Grikovsky, Elena Gubanova, Alexander Dashevsky, Alexey Kostroma, Vladislav Kulkov, Vladimir Kustov, Grigory Mayofis, Semyon Motolyanets, Igor Pestov, Vitaly Pushnitsky,  Kerim Ragimov, Andrey Rudyev, Olga Tobreluts, Leonid Tskhe, Pyotr Shvetsov.

The exhibition is accompanied by a publication with the opening essay written by Ivan Tschechot – a renowned Petersburg art-historian, Head of the Visual Arts History and Theory Department at the Russian Institute of Art History (branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences), professor at the St. Petersburg European University  (Art History Department).

As part of the project its visitors will be offered guided tours of the exhibition conducted by art-mediators at 2 pm on 2015 December 6, 13, 20, and 2016 January 6, 8, 10, 17, as well as a round-table discussion with curators and artists as participants on Thursday the 17th December, 2015 at 6 pm.
