The 12th Contemporary Art in the Traditional Museum Festival organized by the St Petersburg PRO ARTE Foundation and the North-Western Branch of the National Centre for Contemporary Arts will take place from 14 September till 13 October 2013.

This is the first museum festival in St Petersburg; it was established in 2000. Each year several contemporary artists from Russia and abroad receive an opportunity to show their projects in large and small museums of the city. For one month the traditional museum spaces turn into contemporary art venues.

Over the last 13 years 170 projects have been shown in 65 museums by artists from 11 countries. Some of the shows have become widely known, such as The Antarctic Mission (45 penguins placed on the Arctic and Antarctic Museum), Observatory (10 projects in the Pulkovo Observatory), the Complaints Choir of St Petersburg.

The artists participating in the 12th Contemporary Art in the Traditional Museum Festival come from Russia, Israel, Finland, USA and the Netherlands. The upcoming shows include a project Memory Post by Bracha Lichtenberg Ettinger (Israel-France) in the Peter and Paul Fortress and the Freud Museum of Dreams, a video installation A Brief History of Collapses by Mariam Ghani (USA) in the Gatchina Palace Museum, (Canada), an installation Metamorphoses by Alexander Reichshtein (Russia-Finland) in the Children’s Center for Historical Education and many others.

At the opening of the Festival in the Peter and Paul Fortress on the 14th of September at 12.00 a new public art object by  Florentijn Hofman  (the Netherlands) will be presented;

On the 14th and 15th  September free bus shuttles will be operating between the festival museums; admission will be free for all who have a festival map;
