Peter the Great Anthropology and Ethnography Museum (Kunstkammer) of the Russian Academy of Sciences
The museum building stands on the shore of Neva in the historical part of St Petersburg and from early 18th century has been the symbol of Russian Academy of Sciences. The museum set up by Peter I’s order opened its door to the public in 1714. It was designed to collect and investigate rarities created by nature or by man. Nowadays the collection of the museum is one of the largest and most interesting in the world. It counts over a million of items and displays all the multiform cultures of the Old and New Worlds. At the same time the museum has always been and stays one of the biggest research centers focusing on the human cultural heritage and carrying on the traditions of eminent Russian anthropologists of the 18th-20th centuries.
