The name “Forward-back-up-down” is a quotation from Matyushin’s work. The project is based on Matyushin’s “extended vision” theory about artist being able to observe the world around him at 360º and his studies on the color-form, color-environment interaction carried out in 1920-30’s. Numerous laboratory experiments and exercises meant to develop artist’s “extended vision” when observing nature still excite contemporary artists, who would be better equipped technically. Thus they have a chance to extend natural boundaries of human visual perception and provide a new interpretation for the photo- and video-materials obtained through experiments and observations.
The Project takes a view at the relationship between art and nature. Its participants offer a chance to complement a color-form observed in nature with a contrasting colored artificial form that has been devised geometrically and bears a “local code”, reflected by the observer, who uses their own perception limits to the uttermost and “expand their visual angle”. All the art-objects exist “naturally”, “in” the nature, “because” of nature. The subject of research is the process of “extended” and “colored” vision in the field and laboratory environment.
