The project “Observatory” participants, Elena Gubanova, Ivan Govorkov, Liudmila Belova, Sergey Bugaev Africa, Suzan Kleinberg and Yulia Strausova focus on the history of the famous observatory, named in 19th century “the astronomic capital of the world”, as well as on observation, a topic crucial for visual arts. The artists give their interpretation of the scientific vision of the Universe imminent to the astronomers. Their works are displayed in the Astronomy museum (the permanent exhibition in the Round Hall, in the staircases and in the Main Tower dome) as well as in the director’s building and on the research site. Elena Gubanova and Ivan Govorkov use the visual culture artifacts to unfix the notion of linear time. Yulia Strausova points out a dramatic change in the nature of observation, on behalf of V.Ya.Struve, the founder of the Observatory. Sergey Bugaev Africa in his objects analyses mutual influence of astronomic observation and photography. Peter Bely and Liudmila Belova’s installation turn to the Pulkovo Observatory’s history. Suzan Kleinberg demonstrates the speculative nature of observation.
The opening will feature an installation by Ivan Govorkov exploring the idea of humans being alone in the Universe and an audio installation by Sergey Bugaev Africa which transforms astronomic observations into sound signals.
