The State Museum of the Political History of Russia is a successor of the former State Museum of Revolution founded in Petrograd October 9, 1919 by a decree issued by Petrograd Soviet of workers and red-army deputies. Since 1955 the museum has occupied former mansions of Matilda Kshesinskaya, prima-ballerina of the Mariinsky Theatre (architect A.I. von Gogen) and V.Brandt, a well-off woodmonger (architect R.F.Meltser).
The Museum collection covers a period of Russian history starting with Catherine the Great up to latest events in Russia’s political life. It boasts Russia’s largest collections of revolutionary banners, agit-prop porcelain, political posters. Personal objects that belonged to prominent politicians and statesmen, public figures, outstanding commanders, scientists and artists are also deposited in the Museum funds. A special collection is developed to represent political parties and social movements of today, state legal and executive bodies, local bodies and their activities.
The Museum keeps an ongoing tradition of creating stayin hot on the track of the current events. In 1907 members of Narodnaya Volya and the Bolsheviks gathered various memorabilia of their revolutionary activities (independently of on another) and kept them for the future museum. As a result, the Museum now boasts unique materials on the Civil and Great Patriotic War, on the Soviet Union ‘crisis spots’. The Museum also tries to fill in the blanks in the Russian history.
