Annual Festival
Contemporary Art in Traditional Museum
 
The key idea behind the Festival is to bring traditional culture and contemporary art together, to upgrade St. Petersburg museums and to improve their status. The Festival was initiated in 2000 and is supported by Ford Fund and State Museum of St. Petersburg History.
The 9th Festival will take place in 2009. Between 2000 and 2007 46 museums, both large and small participated in the Festival, including: Kunstkamera, Artillery Museum, Museum of Printing Works and Alexander Block Memorial Apartment, Narodovolets-2 Museum Submarine, Experimental Medicine Museum and many others. The Festival has featured works by over 100 artists from St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kaliningrad, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Nizhniy Novgorod, Samara aтв from Germany, the USA, France, the UK, Sweden, the Netherlands and Finland. 73 new art-projects were created specially for the museums and the Festival.
It is a tradition to start the Festival during weekend. PRO ARTE Institute provides free bus-shuttles that run from one museum to another enabling everyone to visit the museums participating in the Festival and see all the exhibitions and art-works (entrance to the museums during these days is also free).
The Festival is a notable and important event for the museums, artists and citizens of St. Petersburg. It attracts huge audiences interested in museums and those who love contemporary art.
After each Festival we publish a colored magazine-catalogue in two languages (Russian and English) providing detailed information on museums, artists, projects as well as articles written by renowned critics about Festival exhibitions. Festival events are widely covered by mass media (TV, radio and published media).
