The Museum of Jurassic Technology
The Museum of Jurassic Technology is one the world’s most unusual museums. It was founded in 1989 by David Hildebrand Wilson and Diana Wilson and got its name from a collection of relics and artifacts from the Lower Jurassic period. Its catalog includes a mixture of artistic and scientific exhibits that evokes the cabinets of curiosities that were the 18th century predecessors of modern natural history museums. The museum maintains a number of permanent exhibits including: a collection of micro-miniature sculptures, exhibit on household myths of years past, a collection devoted to trailer park culture, A collection of stereographic X-ray photographs of flowers, unique theory of memory and oblivion… After Charles Wilson Peale, the artist who in 1786 founded the so-called Peale Museum (now the Philadelphia Museum), the Museum of Jurassic Technology claims that education is essential for the happiness of man and the person being educated should always pass from familiar objects to the unfamiliar ones, leading him as a stray of flowers in the mystery of life. The Museum of Jurassic Technology, often named metaphorically “Mr Wilson Cabinet of Wonder”, is very much unlike modern museums. In 2001 David Wilson was named “MacArthur Fellow” and received the prestigious genius grant for his unique curatorial project.
