The Memorial to Heroic Defenders of Leningrad
(Branch of the Museum of St. Petersburg History)

The Memorial to Heroic Defenders of Leningrad in Pobedy (Victory) Square was unveiled on Victory Day: May 9, 1975. The monument was designed by sculptor M. Anikushin, and architects V.Kamensky and S.Speransky.
A 48 m obelisk made of 236 blocks of red granite brought from Karelia forms the center of the memorial. Two figures on a granite pedestal at the foot of the obelisk – a soldier and a worker – symbolize unity of military and rear forces. The group is called “the Victors”.
A 124 m granite ring behind the obelisk opens towards the Pulkovo heights where in January 1944 the defenders of the city gave a fatal blow to the German troops and broke the siege. The inscription running along the exterior part of the ring reads: ‘To Your Heroic Deed, Leningrad!’ and the inner circle is adorned with decorations and medals the heroic city was awarded with. Inside the ring one finds an open round hall with a bronze sculpture group The Siege in the center. The group stands on a pedestal made of black labradorite. The sculptures present tragic images of the life in the besieged city and victorious spirit of its defenders.
Underground gallery houses memorial exhibition dedicated to the Leningrad siege and city’s defense. Unique combination of historical data and symbolic design help to live through one of the most tragic and heroic pages of the city history.

Address: Pobedy sq. (Moskovskaya metro station). To enter the museum visitors need to walk through the underground passage.
