The N.A.Rimsky-Korsakov Museum in his former apartment

At present this is the only composer's museum in St.Petersburg. Rimsky-Korsakov had spent the last fifteen years of his life, from 1893 to 1908 in this apartment. It was here that he composed eleven of his fifteen operas. After the composer's and his wife's death, for fifty years the apartment was shared by several families. Nevertheless, all private belongings, as well as the furniture, have been carefully preserved by the composer's heirs. In 1970 Rimsky-Korsakov’s descendants came forward with an idea to open the composer’s apartment as a museum. All the memorabilia were returned to where they belonged: composer’s study, antechamber, parlor and dining room; the rest of the apartment has been reconstructed to house a room for exhibitions and a concert hall. Rimsky-Korsakov memorial apartment preserves unique authenticity and ranges among Russia’s major composers’ museums – Tchaikovsky’s house in Klin and Skryabin’s memorial apartment in Moscow.
