Concerto for Harmonium
HARMONIUM is a musical instrument representing a big harmonica supplied with mechanical bellows and a keyboard. Foot-operated bellows that send wind to the air reservoirs and further to the sound-producing tongues constitute a distinctive feature of this instrument. Harmonium performances have always aroused the interest of high society public.
Using the pedals the performer began to pump air to the bellows and it was not until a couple of seconds later that the music began to sound. The playing harmonium generated some air vibrations around itself that created a special aura for the perception of the music. This musical instrument became so popular that in the late 19th – early 20th century it left the church to find its way to households and concert halls thus becoming an indispensable part of a big city society life.
It was the ill-restored harmonium that prompted the plot of the video. Instead of enjoying the wonderful instrument the young people who have come to the concert of the old music have to struggle with the wind sent to the auditorium by harmonica’s bellows. The airflows governed by the music impulses confront the spectators against their will. The history of the perception of music is unfolding in a crescendo-like process: from light to heavy, from a gentle whiff to opposition.
