Communication Signs
(3 projects of the «CNMRG» music studio of the Pro Arte Institute)
Three CNMRG projects that were specially created for the Central Museum of Communications address three dimensions of such a universal and ubiquitous phenomenon as communication. The project Communication Flowers reveals the complexity of achieving true understanding between people. The connection between the past and the present, the attempt to feel the history as a reality is the theme of the Secret Signs installation. The project Backgrounds looks at communication between man and media-space.
Backgrounds
Author: Stanislav Menzulsky
Various media characters surround us everywhere. Not only do they overwhelm us with tons of information but they also impose a lot of image stereotypes on us: how to dress, how to speak, how to use our mimic.
Communication happening between “them” and “us” is a one-way communication. Our disagreement with the imposed “media-rules” always remains on this side of the TV screen and we see the same old masks no matter what our immediate emotional response might be. Underlying the “Backgrounds” project is the ideal idea that our voices can be heard on the other side of the TV screen and the “faces in the TV box” will change. The visitor is offered an opportunity to literally “shout” his message across to the person on the screen. Maybe, he will hear your voice and his face will “enliven”.
Communication flowers
Authors: Yuri Didevich, Dmitri Dubov
The ability to hear and understand another person is the most difficult psychological and social aspect of human life. This interactive installation enables us to make the process of mutual understanding between people a common one – in the literal meaning of the Latin word “communico” – and to transfer it from the everyday routine level to the level of art. In this artistic study the dialogue between the “communicants” undergoes some transformation. The extent of such transformation depends on the amount of the accumulated speech data from both communicants. The more data there is the better understanding can be achieved (like in real life). Technically speaking, it is not the meaning of what is being said that is studied but the timbre of voice, speech dynamic and its temporal characteristics. The interaction between the communicants will serve as an artistic quest for the key to the understanding of the pronounced phrases. The duration of conversation is an important but not determining factor as one can lose and then regain the semantic contact. In fact, we can give up these attempts and transcend to another level of communication – the artistic one. The result of the interaction between the system and the communicants is text-sound.
Secret Signs
Authors: Yuri Didevich, Timur Kuyanov
Prince Alexander Andreyevich Bezborodko was a prominent political figure of the 18th century, one of Catherine II’s associates and the Chancellor of the Russian Empire during Paul I. His palace was not only the venue for aristocratic balls but a place where important state affairs were decided. According to the legend that survived till our days the palace also hosted the Masonic lodge.
This audio-installation submerges the visitor in a special mysterious atmosphere enabling him to feel the mystical aura of these walls as well as the presence of hidden alchemical signs. It arouses interest in the laws and symbols of the Masonic, Hermetic, Kabbalistic and Rosicrucian philosophy.
