The Museum of the History of St Petersburg
The Museum of the History of St Petersburg traces its history from the Museum of Old Petersburg (founded in 1907) and the City Museum (founded in 1918). It is now one of the largest history museums in the country, with a collection of over one million exhibits. The collection includes many rare and historically important works of painting and graphic art, the original designs of leading architects of the eighteenth to twentieth centuries, details of the architectural decor of buildings and interiors and objects of decorative and applied art. This rich and diverse collection also includes documents, photographs, posters, postcards, books, technical equipment, coins and archaeological discoveries.
The Museum of the History of St Petersburg places great stress on showing its collections. In 2003, an exhibition of The History of St Petersburg/Petrograd (1830s to 1918) was opened in the Commander’s House, showing an unprecedented volume of historical artefacts. The exhibition addresses the various forms and features of urban culture in St Petersburg and the everyday life of the city from the mid-nineteenth to early twentieth century. The first room is given over to the symbols of St Petersburg. Visitors can see such visual images of the three-hundred year history of the former Imperial capital as an icon of St Alexander Nevsky, patron saint of the city; the legendary Bronze Horseman, the first monument to the founder of the city, Peter the Great; a symbolical key to the city; the first guidebook to St Petersburg; and the official coat of arms.
