Saara Ekström (b.1965) has become known as an artist who uses surprising and unusual organic materials in her work. She has among other things recorded the last spasm of an open oyster and the disintegration of a decorative still-life with fruit. Ekström’s art explores and reveals the strangeness and unpredictability of the so-called natural, while observing the processes of growth and decay.
The intertwining histories of art, literature and science offer many sources of ideas for the artist. Ekströms personal, modified vegetal morphology crosses nature with the human mind and mathematics: her elements include fractals, algorithms and shapes resembling Rorschach inkblots (symmetrical patterns used in psychoanalysis). Saara Ekström works with video, photography and other media. Her work has been shown in solo- and group exhibitions in USA, Japan, Belgium, Holland and Scandinavia.
