The Memorial Museum-Flat of the Samoilov Actors Family
The famous actor of the Imperial Alexandrinsky Theater Vassily Vassilyevich Samoilov (1803-1848) – a talented member of the Samoilov acting dynasty used to live on the second floor at 8 Stremyannaya street for 18 years (1869-1887). Displayed here are the portraits of representatives of the three generations of the dynasty, personal belongings, furniture items, and pictures skillfully painted by V.V. Samoilov. The large portrait hall introduces the visitor to the Samoilovs’ artistic milieu, the history of St Petersburg Imperial Theatres in the 19th – beginning of the 20th century. One can also see various articles of the last century’s theatre life, personal belongings of the prominent actors of Alexandrinka. Performances now held in a small concert hall revive the musical traditions of the Samoilovs who would regularly organize musical soirées.
The Museum also displays an exhibition dedicated to the people and events of the Russian Ballet Theatre. One of the great many vivid names that St Petersburg has acquired in the course of its history is “the capital of the Russian ballet”: it is our city that gave the world such outstanding dancers of the 20th century as A. Pavlova, V. Nijinsky, G. Ulanova, M. Baryshnikov, R. Nureyev. The Museum display provides a unique opportunity to learn more about these prominent dancers. Here one can also see the original sketches by Léon Bakst and Alexander Benois as well as the most rare photographs and billboards preserving the memory of the legendary performances of Marius Petipa, the highlights of Diaghilev's Ballets Russes and the famous premiers of the Soviet time.
