The Museum of Theatrical and Musical Arts

St Petersburg State Museum of Theatrical and Musical Arts – which is to celebrate its 100th Anniversary in 2008 – is located in the historic center of the city in the building that belongs to one of the finest architectural ensembles – the Alexandrinsky Theatre. This architectural masterpiece together with the street that now bears his name was created by Carlo Rossi. Since 1840 the Directorate of the Imperial Theatres was based here.
The nucleus of the Museum collection was made up by a number of private collections of St Petersburg actors of the Alexandrinsky Theatre: Ivan Gorbunov, Maria Savina, Vladimir Davydov and of some theatre figures Anatoly Molchanov, Vladimir Protopopov, Levky Zheverzheev and Sergei Svetlov.
Today the Museum display mounted in five exhibition rooms features valuable material relating to the history of the Russian drama theatre: set and costume sketches by A. Golovin, M. Dobuzhinsky, S. Sudeykin, B. Kustodiyev, K. Malevich, scale models, photographs and personal belongings of famous actors.
