The Light of Knowledge. Electric Show
The Museum of the History of St Petersburg State University is located in the premises of the University church. Today regular church services are held in the museum. It is here that the eclectic character of contemporary Russian life reveals itself with utmost vividness. The Orthodox Church is incapable of ousting the Soviet cultural institution. The light of knowledge still comes to us from the socialist era but at the same time preserves its links with the symbolism of the Enlightenment. The University itself seeks to combine the traditions of Soviet education and the Bologna system. Everything is mixed up, things and times combined easily and totally arbitrarily. The “Light of Knowledge” project is an attempt to overcome the schizophrenia of the current Russian reality.
The altar-like structure is made up from stain-glass panels bearing the graphic portraits of prominent Soviet scholars (the copies of the Soviet-time paintings decorating the corridor of the Twelve Collegia building) executed in a special technique – a combination of graphic images composed from various symbols. The Baroque music and flashes of light contribute to creating a special exhibition environment. On entrance the visitors receive the so-called “nuts of knowledge” meant to stimulate a thoughtful approach to the viewing of the exhibition.
