Sixth Exhibition of the Thingies Cycle: Corsets
Pro Arte Institute Exhibition Hall
Nevsky Courtine, Peter and Paul Fortress
10--29 December 2004
Throughout the centuries, the corset was -- and still is -- used to correct the wearer’s figure, attract attention and protect virtue. A source of physical sufferings and unseen tears, it is both a fetish and a symbol of self-education and self-discipline. The corset is the forerunner of the modern body belt and other attempts to achieve a perfect figure. Its complex construction traces the development of the art of tailoring, while the diverse types reflect the changing fashions and ideas of public morals and ethics.
Three turn-of-the-century corsets from the collection of the Museum of the History of St Petersburg were exhibited alongside works by contemporary artists on this theme -- Ekaterina Ilina’s Anti-Corset falsification project and Sergei Denisov and Kirill Shuvalov’s Donkey’s Waist cartoon.
The exhibition was accompanied by a series of lectures read by Yulia Demidenko, deputy director for academic research, Museum of the History of St Petersburg.
