At the overview lecture, Olesya Turkina will explain how contemporary art gained recognition in Russia and how the Russian contemporary art gained recognition in the West, how the Russian Museum’s contemporary art department built their collection, when curating emerged as a new profession, how geopolitics sparked the fashion for 'national' contemporary art and what to do with no money, but a lot of ideas.
Olesya Turkina is a PhD holder in art history, curator, critic, a leading researcher at the Contemporary Art Department of the State Russian Museum, an associate professor of the Department of Liberal Arts and Sciences and a Board Member of the Curatorial Research programme at St. Petersburg State University.
