On September 24 at 8 pm (Moscow time) the PRO ARTE Foundation and the State Hermitage Museum present the online premiere of the documentary film Ne Zrya about the project Special Theatre. Theatrical Laboratory for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

'Ne zrya' is a phrase in Russian having two very different meanings: 'not seeing' and 'not in vain'. This is the title of the PRO ARTE’s project that involves participants with visual disabilities. The project started in 2017, and engages 22 people, 10 of whom are visually impaired, 2 are deaf-blind and 10 are non-disabled professionals. The theatre-laboratory participants studied acting, learnt how to work with sound and space, perception of colour and shape, got acquainted with contemporary theatre and took tours to the Hermitage.

A year and a half later, Boris Pavlovich, laureate of the Russian national theatre award Golden Mask, directed a performance.  This performance is based on documentary stories of the Special Theatre’s blind actors, and is investigating a phenomenon of vision. What it really means ‘to see'? Is the one who can see — is seeing everything? Is the one who cannot see does not really see anything?

In 2018-2019, the play Ne Zrya was performed at the Hermitage Theatre and on the New Stage of the Alexandrinsky Theatre in St Petersburg.

The documentary film Ne Zrya shows how the play was created.
Directed by Svetlana Konopleva.
Running time: 45 minutes.
In Russian, 2 versions — with and without audio description.
The film will be screened on the project’s web-page:

The film will be available from 8pm Thursday, 24 September till 8pm Friday, 25 September 2020.
Supported by the Committee for Culture of St Petersburg and the Presidential Grants Foundation.
