Mark Maklakov's project "Water Pavilion" is the second in a series of solo exhibitions by the students of the PRO ARTE School for Young Artists, 2020-21. The artists' exhibitions are the result of seminars led by curator Lizaveta Matveyeva, dedicated to the issues of site-specific art projects.
In the space of the PRO ARTE Foundation in the Peter and Paul Fortress, the artist has placed a Water Pavilion, which inevitably reminds the viewer of the Baroque pavilion "The Grotto" in the Catherine Park in Tsarskoye Selo. The building conveys a joyful mood thanks to its sky-blue color and multi-colored grotesques. But the frivolous nature of the facade is only part of the story — inside the Pavilion there are paintings washed away by the flood, and seemingly cheerful grotesques are an illustration of duality, where there is a place for both life and death.
Mark Maklakov works with graphics and painting. In 2018, the graphic series "Kunstkamera", "Masks", "Venus" were shown in the artist's gallery in the Loft project "Etazhi", St. Petersburg. Participant of the PRO ARTE "School for Young Artists" 2020-21 and the THEATRUM Laboratory of the Theater Institute, Kazan, 2020. A graduate of the Ioganson Art School, in 2011-2015 he studied at the Russian State Institute for Performing Arts. Lives and works in St. Petersburg.
